What Is Green Concrete Cutting?
Early-entry sawing on fresh concrete — timing is everything
Cut It Right. Cut It On Time.
Green concrete cutting — also called early-entry sawing — is the process of cutting control joints into freshly poured concrete before it fully cures. Concrete shrinks as it hardens. That shrinkage creates internal stress. If you don't give that stress a place to go, it will find its own path — resulting in random, uncontrolled cracking across your slab. Once concrete has fully cured and hardened, flat concrete sawing is used for any cutting needed through the slab.
Control joints are intentional weak points — shallow cuts that guide shrinkage cracks to occur in a straight line along the joint rather than randomly across the surface. The result is a slab that looks clean and performs as designed. Green cutting is performed with specialized early-entry saws that are lightweight enough to operate on fresh concrete without disturbing the surface finish. If the finished slab later needs surface work, trip hazard removal or coating prep, our concrete grinding service handles that.
The critical factor in green concrete cutting is timing. Cut too early and the saw ravels the edges of the joint — pulling aggregate out of the fresh concrete and leaving a ragged, ugly cut. Cut too late and the concrete has already cracked on its own — making the joint cuts useless. The window is typically 1 to 4 hours after placement depending on concrete mix design, temperature, humidity and wind conditions on that specific day in Houston.
Our crews are experienced in reading fresh concrete and hitting the window precisely. We monitor the pour and move the moment the concrete is ready — not before, not after. When wall openings or round holes are also needed on the same project, we handle wall sawing and concrete coring as well.
Pre-Pour Coordination
We coordinate with you and your concrete contractor before the pour. Joint layout, spacing and depth are planned in advance so we are ready to move the moment the concrete is placed.
Monitoring the Concrete
After placement we monitor the slab for hardness. We test the surface regularly to determine when the concrete is firm enough to walk on and cut without raveling or disturbance.
Early-Entry Cutting
The moment the concrete is ready our early-entry saw goes to work. The lightweight machine rolls across the fresh slab on skid plates, cutting clean joints to the specified depth along pre-marked lines.
Joint Completion
All joints are cut to the correct depth — typically one quarter of the slab thickness. The cuts are clean, straight and ready to control shrinkage cracking as the concrete finishes curing over the following days and weeks.
