What Is Green Concrete Cutting?

Early-entry sawing on fresh concrete — timing is everything

Cut It Right. Cut It On Time.

Green concrete cutting — also called early-entry sawing — is the process of cutting control joints into freshly poured concrete before it fully cures. Concrete shrinks as it hardens. That shrinkage creates internal stress. If you don't give that stress a place to go, it will find its own path — resulting in random, uncontrolled cracking across your slab. Once concrete has fully cured and hardened, flat concrete sawing is used for any cutting needed through the slab.

Control joints are intentional weak points — shallow cuts that guide shrinkage cracks to occur in a straight line along the joint rather than randomly across the surface. The result is a slab that looks clean and performs as designed. Green cutting is performed with specialized early-entry saws that are lightweight enough to operate on fresh concrete without disturbing the surface finish. If the finished slab later needs surface work, trip hazard removal or coating prep, our concrete grinding service handles that.

The critical factor in green concrete cutting is timing. Cut too early and the saw ravels the edges of the joint — pulling aggregate out of the fresh concrete and leaving a ragged, ugly cut. Cut too late and the concrete has already cracked on its own — making the joint cuts useless. The window is typically 1 to 4 hours after placement depending on concrete mix design, temperature, humidity and wind conditions on that specific day in Houston.

Our crews are experienced in reading fresh concrete and hitting the window precisely. We monitor the pour and move the moment the concrete is ready — not before, not after. When wall openings or round holes are also needed on the same project, we handle wall sawing and concrete coring as well.

HOW IT WORKS
1

Pre-Pour Coordination

We coordinate with you and your concrete contractor before the pour. Joint layout, spacing and depth are planned in advance so we are ready to move the moment the concrete is placed.

2

Monitoring the Concrete

After placement we monitor the slab for hardness. We test the surface regularly to determine when the concrete is firm enough to walk on and cut without raveling or disturbance.

3

Early-Entry Cutting

The moment the concrete is ready our early-entry saw goes to work. The lightweight machine rolls across the fresh slab on skid plates, cutting clean joints to the specified depth along pre-marked lines.

4

Joint Completion

All joints are cut to the correct depth — typically one quarter of the slab thickness. The cuts are clean, straight and ready to control shrinkage cracking as the concrete finishes curing over the following days and weeks.

Common Applications

Green concrete cutting is used on virtually every concrete pour in Houston — commercial and residential

Warehouse & Industrial Slabs
Large format warehouse floor slabs require precisely spaced control joints to manage shrinkage cracking across tens of thousands of square feet of freshly placed concrete.
Residential Driveways & Slabs
New residential concrete driveways, garage slabs, patios and pool decks require early-entry control joint cuts to prevent random cracking across the finished surface.
Parking Lots & Roadways
Commercial parking lots and concrete roadways require systematic control joint layouts cut immediately after placement to manage shrinkage and thermal movement in Houston's heat.
Sidewalks & Walkways
New sidewalk and walkway sections require control joints at regular intervals. Early-entry cutting creates the joint cleanly without disturbing the broom finish of the fresh concrete.
Retail & Commercial Floors
Retail stores, restaurants, office buildings and commercial facilities all require control joint patterns cut into their concrete floor slabs immediately after pour completion.
Tilt-Wall Floor Slabs
Tilt-wall construction requires precise control joint cutting in the building's ground slab before the wall panels are lifted — a critical and time-sensitive operation on every tilt-wall job site.
Pool Decks
New concrete pool decks require control joints cut immediately after placement to prevent cracking in Houston's extreme heat and the temperature cycling around pool water.
Bridge Decks & Elevated Slabs
Bridge deck and elevated structural slab pours require early-entry control joint cutting to manage shrinkage in concrete exposed to temperature extremes and traffic loading.
Municipal & Public Works
City sidewalks, municipal parking lots, public plazas and government facility slabs throughout the Houston area all require timely control joint cutting after every concrete pour.

Green Concrete Cutting — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about early-entry concrete sawing in Houston TX

Why is timing so critical for green concrete cutting?
Concrete begins shrinking the moment water is added to the mix. The internal stress from shrinkage builds rapidly during curing. If control joints are not cut before that stress exceeds the concrete's tensile strength, random cracks appear — and they cannot be undone. The window for early-entry cutting is typically 1 to 4 hours after placement. In Houston's summer heat that window can be even shorter. Miss it and the damage is done.
How do you know when the concrete is ready to cut?
We test the surface by pressing our thumb into the concrete and walking on it. The concrete is ready when it supports foot traffic without leaving a significant impression and the surface no longer shines with bleed water. We check every 15 to 30 minutes after the initial set and move the moment the slab is ready. Experience matters here — our crews have read Houston concrete in every season and weather condition.
What happens if you cut too early?
Cutting too early causes raveling — the saw blade drags aggregate out of the fresh concrete, leaving ragged, torn edges along the joint instead of clean cuts. Raveled joints are unattractive and can collect debris and moisture over time. They also defeat the purpose of the joint by creating an irregular weak point rather than a controlled one. This is why we monitor carefully rather than cutting on a fixed schedule.
What happens if you cut too late?
If joints are cut after the concrete has already begun cracking, the cuts are useless — the crack has already followed its own path. In hot weather, especially during a Houston summer, concrete can begin cracking in as little as 2 hours after placement if conditions are severe. Once a random crack forms it cannot be corrected without significant repair work. Getting us there early is always better than waiting.
How deep do the control joints need to be cut?
The standard minimum depth for a control joint is one quarter of the slab thickness. For a 4-inch slab that means a 1-inch deep joint. For a 6-inch slab, 1.5 inches. Some engineers and specifications require deeper cuts — one third of slab thickness — for more reliable crack induction. We cut to the depth specified on your plans or to ACI standards if no depth is specified.
How far apart should control joints be spaced?
The general rule of thumb is joint spacing in feet should not exceed 2 to 3 times the slab thickness in inches. For a 4-inch slab that means joints every 8 to 12 feet. For industrial slabs with higher shrinkage potential, closer spacing may be required. The joint layout should be designed by the engineer of record or concrete contractor before the pour — not improvised during cutting. We cut to whatever layout is provided.
Does Houston's heat affect green concrete cutting?
Significantly. Houston's summer heat accelerates concrete curing dramatically — what might take 3 hours to be ready in mild weather can take 90 minutes in July heat with direct sun and hot wind. We factor in ambient temperature, solar radiation, wind speed and concrete mix design when estimating the cutting window. On hot days we are on site early and ready to move fast. We have been cutting green concrete in Houston summers since 2002 and know exactly what to expect.
Can you cut green concrete at night?
Yes. Many large commercial pours in Houston happen at night to avoid the heat of the day. We work night shifts and are available around the clock for green concrete cutting. Night pours typically have a longer window because cooler temperatures slow the initial set — but the cutting still needs to happen, and we are there for it.
Do you serve areas outside Houston?
Yes. We serve all of greater Houston including Katy, Sugar Land, Pearland, The Woodlands, Cypress, Humble, Baytown, Pasadena, League City and all surrounding communities. For larger commercial pours we travel further. Contact us with your pour date, location and slab details and we will get you scheduled.
