What Is Concrete Grinding?
Diamond tooling for surface prep, leveling, coating removal and trip hazard elimination
Smooth, Level, Ready for Whatever Comes Next
Concrete grinding uses rotating diamond-segmented tooling to remove material from the surface of concrete. The grinder's rotating head holds diamond cups, discs or segments that abrade the concrete surface down to the desired level — removing high spots, coatings, adhesives, paint and surface irregularities with precision control. When a straight cut through the slab is needed rather than surface work, flat concrete sawing is the right service.
Unlike scarifying or shot blasting, diamond grinding produces a smooth, flat result. It can remove as little as a few thousandths of an inch to level a minor high spot, or grind down significantly more material to address severe unevenness, failed coatings or structural surface damage. The process is dry or wet depending on the application and location. When holes are needed through the slab for drainage or conduit, see our concrete coring service.
Concrete grinding is one of the most versatile services we offer. It is used for trip hazard removal on sidewalks and public walkways, surface preparation before coatings and overlays, leveling of uneven slabs, removal of adhesive residue after tile or carpet removal, and smoothing of rough or broom-finished concrete prior to polishing or sealing. For freshly poured concrete that needs control joints cut before it hardens, see our green concrete cutting service.
Surface Assessment
We assess the surface condition, identify high spots, measure elevation differences and determine the correct diamond tooling and grinder size for your specific concrete and application.
Tooling Selection
Diamond segments are selected based on concrete hardness, the amount of material to be removed and the required finish. Softer concrete uses harder bonds — harder concrete uses softer bonds.
Grinding
The grinder passes over the surface in overlapping passes. Material is removed evenly and consistently. Dust is captured by vacuum systems attached directly to the grinder head.
Inspection & Cleanup
The ground surface is inspected for flatness and finish. Concrete dust and debris are vacuumed and removed. The surface is left clean and ready for the next step — coating, overlay, sealer or polishing.
Common Applications
Concrete grinding solves a wide range of surface problems on commercial and residential projects across Houston
