What Is Flat Concrete Sawing?

Also known as slab sawing — the most common concrete cutting method in Houston

Precision Cuts on Any Horizontal Surface

Flat concrete sawing — also called slab sawing or flatwork sawing — is the process of cutting straight lines through horizontal concrete surfaces using a walk-behind diamond blade saw. The saw rolls forward on wheels while a large vertical diamond blade cuts cleanly through the slab. For vertical cuts through walls and elevated slabs, see our wall sawing service.

It is the go-to method for any concrete surface lying flat: floors, driveways, parking lots, roadways, bridge decks, sidewalks and warehouse slabs. Our equipment can cut up to 30 inches deep — through virtually any thickness of concrete including heavily reinforced slabs with rebar or wire mesh. When a round hole is needed rather than a straight cut, concrete coring is the right service.

We use both wet cutting and dry cutting methods depending on the job. Wet cutting suppresses silica dust and extends blade life. Dry cutting with vacuum collection is used for interior jobs where water is a concern. For freshly poured concrete that needs control joints cut immediately, see our green concrete cutting service.

HOW IT WORKS
1

Site Assessment

We assess the slab thickness, locate any rebar or post-tension cables, and mark cut lines precisely before any blade touches concrete.

2

Blade Selection

The correct diamond blade is selected based on concrete hardness, aggregate type, depth required and whether the slab contains rebar.

3

Precision Cutting

Our walk-behind flat saw cuts straight, clean lines to the exact specified depth. Water suppresses dust and keeps the blade cool throughout the cut.

4

Site Cleanup

Concrete slurry and debris are removed. The cut is clean, straight and ready for whatever comes next — removal, repair or utility installation.

Flat Concrete Sawing — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about flat sawing in Houston TX

How deep can you cut with a flat saw?
Our flat saws can cut up to 30 inches deep in a single pass. Most residential and commercial slabs range from 4 to 12 inches thick, so depth is rarely a limitation. For cuts deeper than 30 inches, we can use additional methods including wire sawing.
Can you cut through concrete that has rebar in it?
Yes. Diamond blades cut cleanly through reinforced concrete including rebar, wire mesh and fiber reinforcement. We recommend a GPR (ground penetrating radar) scan before cutting on structural slabs to locate post-tension cables, which require special handling. We can arrange scanning prior to cutting if needed.
Do you cut wet or dry? What happens to the water and slurry?
We primarily use wet cutting, which suppresses silica dust and cools the blade for a cleaner cut. The resulting concrete slurry is managed on site and does not enter storm drains. For interior work where water is a concern, we use dry cutting with industrial vacuum systems that capture dust at the source — fully OSHA silica compliant.
Will flat sawing damage the surrounding concrete?
No. Diamond blade flat sawing is one of the least disruptive concrete cutting methods available. It produces minimal vibration compared to jackhammering or breaking, and the cut is surgically precise. Surrounding concrete is not affected. This is one of the main reasons contractors prefer flat sawing over demolition hammers for slab work.
Can you also cut asphalt with a flat saw?
Yes. Our flat saws cut through asphalt pavement as well as concrete. A different blade specification is used for asphalt versus concrete, and our equipment handles both. We serve roadway contractors, utility companies and municipalities across the greater Houston area for asphalt cutting work.
How long does flat concrete sawing take?
Cut times depend on the length of cut, depth required and concrete hardness. A typical trench cut of 50 to 100 linear feet in a standard 4-inch slab can be completed in a few hours. Larger projects are quoted with an estimated timeline. We work efficiently to keep your project on schedule.
Do you remove the cut concrete after sawing?
Flat sawing is a cutting service — removal and disposal of concrete sections is typically handled by the general contractor or demolition crew. However, we can discuss your specific project requirements and coordinate accordingly. Contact us to discuss what your job requires.
Do you serve areas outside of Houston?
Yes. We serve all of greater Houston including Katy, Sugar Land, Pearland, The Woodlands, Cypress, Humble, Baytown, Pasadena, League City, and all surrounding communities. For larger commercial projects we travel further. Contact us with your location and project details.
